Budgeting: Why budget?
So you keep track of your money. This doesn't mean you can't have a good time - it just helps make your money go further! Try our Budget Planner

Start a record of all the money coming in. Then work out your living costs which might include:
  • Food
  • Electricity/gas/water
  • Rent
  • Household insurance
  • Travel - bus, train etc.
  • Car
  • Clothes
  • Hobbies
  • Entertainment
Plan your spending so that you have enough to cover everything -save a little each month to meet the bills!

Think before you spend - it can help save money!
Try these tips:
    General:
  • Only buy on a cash basis. If you cannot afford something try and save up for it.
  • Do not be afraid to haggle if you are paying cash.
  • When you are thinking of buying something wait for 30 days. Then before you buy it ask yourself if you still need it! In the meantime - check prices.
  • Use the washing machine to full potential.
  • Buy items out of season. Buy Christmas cards half-price in January - just don't lose them!
  • Learn home and car maintenance.
  • Keep budgeting.
    Food
  • Always use a shopping list.
  • Never go shopping when you are hungry.
  • Try own brands.
  • Buy long-life food in bulk - as long as you know you will use it.
  • Use a calculator to add up the cost as you go along.
  • Plan your meals before you go shopping and only buy for those meals.
  • Evaluate whether it is cheaper to buy items such as toothpaste and toiletries from the supermarket or chemist.
  • Buy seasonal veg when they are cheap.
  • Look out for special offers.
  • Eat in wherever possible - it's cheaper.
  • Avoid as many pre-prepared foods as possible, as you are paying for expensive labour.
    Car
  • Think about whether it is easier and cheaper to use public transport or a bike.
  • Look for value (i.e. mileage and condition) as well as price
  • Pay cash whenever possible
  • Establish a repair fund in your budget.
  • Keep the car properly maintained.
  • Deal with any problems immediately they occur.
  • Check a car carefully before buying it! Check for:
    Signs of repainting
    Burnt oil on the valves
    Any 'knocking' sounds
    Dirty exhaust
    Any vibration when you brake
Check tyres, electricals, carpet and upholstery.
